Missed Opportunity in Optimizing Content

SEO is ever evolving. It takes time, diligence, and ongoing commitment – you can’t just do it once and forget about it. Your website must adapt and keep up or you’ll be left behind.

Below are some of the missed SEO opportunities often seen that can be easily fixed:

Failure to update content:

SEO best practices change every day because Google and the other search engines are constantly updating their algorithms. Chances are that you have at least one dated piece of content on your website that is ranking for one or more keywords. The problem is, when people click on it and see it is a few years old, they are more likely to click back and look for fresher content. Take a look at your Google Analytics and see if your site has older posts that are still getting traffic. Take just a few moments to update those posts or add a link to a newer post and recapture a significant amount of traffic.

Duplicate or poorly written content:

Content is the king, cannot stress enough. However, sometimes you see copy/pasted content and sometimes there are duplicated content issues from technical issues. If you are not sure, then run a check on your site.

Poorly written meta tags and title description

When someone conducts a search, you have only a few short lines to entice them to click through to your website. A properly written page title is helpful to the SEO of your site and should entice the searcher to click on your website. When creating your page titles and Meta descriptions, look ad related PPC ads for inspiration.

Failure to use targeted landing page:

When users click on ad or find you via searching around, they expect to land on a page that is relevant to the keyword phrase. If the visitor searched for denim jacket, you better take them to page about denim jacket and not to a homepage for your site.

Poor keyword selection:

Whenever you are selecting keywords, after identifying good keywords for your business, follow up with checking on monthly search traffic data. If nobody is searching for the terms, you are not going to see any results.

Competitive analysis:

If you haven’t even bothered to set up website analytics, how can you determine what’s working – and what isn’t – on your site? Also by spending time researching your competitors you can learn a lot about what works and what doesn’t in your target market.

No Sitemap

You’re writing great content on your site, right? So make sure the search engines see it as soon as they can so it can be ranked.

To create a sitemap, you can typically use a plugin with your content management system, such as the Yoast SEO plugin for WordPress.

Poorly executed video embedding

Videos can be a great addition to any website, but often the execution of videos on the website isn’t ideal for SEO. Many websites use JavaScript popovers for video. This is a missed opportunity to additional content ranking.
